TikTok goes offline in US hours before ban due to come in
On January 19, 2025, TikTok went offline in the United States just hours before a ban was set to take effect. This action was in response to a law requiring its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest its U.S. operations by January 19, a mandate upheld by the Supreme Court.
Users attempting to access the app were met with a message stating that the ban had been enacted, rendering TikTok temporarily unavailable. The app was also removed from both Apple and Google's U.S. app stores, and TikTok's website ceased displaying videos.
In response, President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to issue an executive order granting TikTok a 90-day reprieve from the ban upon taking office on January 20. He proposed a joint venture with 50% U.S. ownership as a solution to address national security concerns.
Following this announcement, TikTok began restoring its services in the U.S., expressing gratitude to President-elect Trump for his support and the clarity provided to its service providers.
